Title: A New American Atlas: containing maps of the several states of the North American Union
Author: Henry S. Tanner (1786 - 1858)
Imprint: Philadelphia, H.S. Tanner, 1825
Dimensions: H 65cm x W 44.2cm x T 3.5cm
Total Treatment Time: 28 hours
Main Condition Issue: The atlas had been previously rebound and this binding made it difficult for the maps to open flat. Additionally, the guards were too brittle to safely manipulate the maps. The tight binding also resulted in tears along the maps' center folds.
Treatment Summary: Karissa Muratore (WUDPAC 2020), the previous Advanced Book Conservation Intern, completed the textblock treatment - surface cleaning, mending, flattening where needed, removing old guards and attaching new guards to the maps, and resewing the textblock. But, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Karissa was not able to complete the treatment. I finished the treatment by casing in the textblock and stamping new parchment labels for the front cover and spine.
