Rosenwald Collection Enclosures
Cloth-covered, drop-spine enclosure with a tray with Baudelaire's "Poemes" (1933)
The first project of my internship was to build two cloth-covered drop-spine boxes for two items from the Rosenwald Collection, held in the Rare Book and Special Collections Division of the Library. The total treatment time for both enclosures was 89 hours.
The enclosure for Charles Baudelaire's "Poemes" (1933) includes a tray which holds the slipcase the book was housed in when it arrived in the lab.
The enclosure for Petrus Apianus's "Astronomicum caesareum" (1540) houses only the volume. The slipcase was returned to the Rare Book Division.
The gold stamping on the leather spine pieces was done using a PraGnant Stamping Machine.
See images below to see the slipcases and the new enclosures.
