TitleTorat Moshe

Author: Moses Alshekh (1508 - 1593)

Imprint: Belvedere, Reyna Nasi, c. 1593

Dimensions: H 29.5cm x W 20.0cm x T1.7cm

Total Treatment Time: 194 hours (as of July 23, 2021)

Main Condition Issues: The book was rebound by the Government Printing Office in the first half of the twentieth century and the tight binding makes using the book and reading the text very difficult. The title page and the last leaf suffered large losses, and there is staining throughout the textblock. After disbinding, it quickly became clear that very few spine folds remained intact.

Treatment Summary: This treatment is still in progress. The book has been disbound and the thick layer of animal glue on the spine was reduced. The textblock was washed, alkalized, and sized with gelatin. New guards will be attached to the leaves, the textblock structure reconstructed and sewn, and the book will be bound in a new binding that is more accurate to the time and place in which it was printed.
